How do I schedule an appointment?
Click on the Request Free Consultation button and complete the form. If you prefer, you can call Melissa at (423) 521-5802. Melissa usually answers same or next day.
Is what I say confidential?
Absolutely, with the only restrictions of law. As stated by the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics (https://www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/ethics), the American Mental Health Association Code of Ethics (https://www.amhca.org/publications/ethics). This sentiment is echoed in the American Dance Therapy Association in the Code of Ethics(https://adta.org/ethics/), we “recognize that trust is fundamental to the therapy relationship and safeguard client privacy and confidentiality with the exception of specific disclosed limits.” I am bound to each of these Codes. At the beginning of our relationship, I will provide a detailed description of these requirements. The law does require me to report issues of abuse or danger to another or one’s self.
Do I have to dance?
No. Melissa is a trained mental health counselor as well as a dance/movement therapist. If you want to talk and not move, that is fine. Also dance/movement therapy doesn’t require you to dance. All movement is viewed as a form of a dance and in dance/movement therapy, we can work with whatever movement you would like to do.
Does it mean there’s something “wrong” with you if you see a therapist?
I see someone who decides to get help as strong. You go to the doctor if you have the flu and for preventive care. Seeking help from a therapist should be as commonplace as seeing a doctor.
I’d like to learn more about dance/movement therapy.
The American Dance Therapy Association has a YouTube channel with great information about dance/movement therapy.
How much do you charge?
Sessions are 50 minutes and the cost is $130. The practice does not take insurance at this time; we prefer to work with clients to determine the path through counseling rather than conforming to insurance companies’ limitations. We accept cash, checks and all major credit cards. If you can’t afford therapy, we can discuss a sliding scale.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
24 hours notice is required for cancellation; otherwise, you may be charged for the entire session fee.
